A few nights ago we had an interview here with the brilliant Zerlina Maxwell about the Steubenville rape trial and the persistent rape culture in a society where so many men still don’t take the crime of rape seriously. And during the interview, Zerlina mentioned a shocking statistic:

Maxwell: “Three percent of rapists go to jail.”

That’s right. Now that’s not a fact; too many rapes are still unreported, so accurate numbers are going to be impossible. But I found that low conviction statistic sad, scary and outrageous —only 3 percent of rapists go to jail — and it’s a likely reason why so many women who’ve been attacked still don’t report it to the authorities.

So I posted a link to the interview on Twitter, and we got a lot of replies from people who were appalled at the conviction rate, and people who loved Zerlina Maxwell, and just people who have Time Warner Cable and miss being able to watch our show.

And then came this response from a fellow who goes by @webweaver-something-something. We’re obscuring his avatar pic and the rest of his name out of courtesy. This gentleman tweeted back: “100 percent of rapists go to jail. You are not officially a rapist until you are convicted.”

Now, once I stopped vomiting, I tried to make sense of his logic: 100 percent of rapists go to jail, ’cause if there’s no conviction, it’s not really rape, legally.

Obviously, this is as offensive as it is stupid. By this logic, John Wilkes Booth died an innocent man, because even though a theater full of people saw him kill Lincoln, there was no conviction.

So I just need to get this off my chest:

For me David Kawena from Lilo and Stitch is the ultimate Disney prince because he is there for Nani AND Lilo and even Stitch despite everything that’s going on in their lives. They’re going through some tough stuff. Their parents die and all of the sudden Nani has to be a mom to her sister who is socially awkward and depressed and that’s hard enough as it is and then she gets her this ‘dog’ and everything gets harder and even though she can’t return David’s feelings he’s still there for them through everything. Even aliens. He’s amazing. I was watching Lilo and Stitch with my niece the other day and I cried watching David go through it all. He is the perfect guy. Like I just get emotional thinking about him.

Imagine if you had someone like David in your life - male or female. You would feel like a prince/princess even if you were living with next to nothing.

David is the ultimate Disney prince - even though he isn’t a Disney prince. He should be considered one.

Exactly, and we never saw him pressuring Nani, he was never pushy or whiny about his feelings for her. He made it clear that he cared for her in the ways that mattered.

At the most, he made jokes about his feelings for her. “David, I owe you one.” “That’s okay, let’s go on a date and call it even.” But, as you said, he never pressured her, and I think the fact that he was honest about his feelings for her, but still stayed friends with her because that’s how she wanted it says a lot about his character.

These characters are gorgeous, you know why? Because they’re, essentially, the same boy on opposite sides of the track.

They’re both forced into impossible situations. Draco is forced into Lord Voldemort’s inner circle by his father’s actions and is being pushed and threatened to do things he’d rather not. Harry is forced into a confrontation and destiny he doesn’t want by a prophecy and Voldemort’s actions.

Both are deeply passionate and defensive of their Hogwarts house. Arguably, they both embody the core values of each house. Draco is incredibly sly and cunning and ambitious, desperate to get what he wants. Harry is desperately brave and reckless and courageous. They’re both leaders of their house and even play the same position on their Quidditch teams.

Both boys are famous and influential. Draco has his family’s name and his family’s wealth. Harry has his fame and reputation.

Both boys are used in the war. Harry is used by Dumbledore, prepared and trained to fight Voldemort, manipulated (to a certain degree) into some of his choices. Draco is used by Voldemort to kill Dumbledore, possibly expose Severus as a spy, etc.

There are differences, of course, but, these are, essentially, the same fucking character split into two and pitted against each other—light and dark explored. Bless you JKR.
